DPE Tuesday Talk – Effects of Police Force Size and California Criminal Justice Reforms on Crime Rates

Dr. Stephen Marks presents a study that uses annual data on 248 U.S. cities over 2000-19 to examine the effects of police force size and three California criminal justice reforms on crime. Based on generalized method of moments estimation for dynamic panels, he finds almost all positive, and in some cases statistically significant permanent and/or transitory effects of the reforms on various categories of property crimes.

Dr. Marks is the Elden Smith Professor of Economics at Pomona College. Among his areas of expertise are international economics and microeconomics.
