Twenty years ago, the M.F.A. class of 2004 left Claremont Graduate University to live their lives and establish themselves across a wide range of professional careers. Now, they are back. Taking over the Peggy Phelps and East Galleries again for one month, they are mounting a reunion show. This exhibition, curated by Aragna Ker, Lisette Bourne, and Jeffrey Ribaudo, showcases a broad scope of artwork reflecting the rich trajectories each class member has forged since graduation. Paintings and photographs are shown alongside conceptual works and installations, attesting to the class of 04’s creative diversity and intellect.
Getting the Band Back Together is a unique chance to explore what became of the artists Claremont Graduate University produced and see how they adapted and grew over time. Each artwork reflects a life lived, experiences had, and the establishment of one’s identity as an artist and a human. What are the questions these creatives now ask? How do they see the world and think of themselves in it? How have their practices changed? These, among other questions, are what this show seeks to discover.
