President’s Welcome and Partnership Update – August 2026

Dear CGU Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Welcome to the 2026-27 academic year at Claremont Graduate University. The first days of the fall semester are always an exciting time. I have experienced them for more than 20 years, and I never tire of the special feelings they evoke.

It was an honor to welcome the newest members of our community at New Student Orientation last Friday, and we look forward to supporting them throughout their academic journeys. This morning, it was equally a pleasure to see so many familiar faces at our faculty and staff meeting. We are grateful for everyone’s commitment, candor, and collegiality as we navigate a consequential season for the university together.

This year will be unlike any in my memory, with the promise of revitalizing change and the stresses that naturally accompany it. Just as our students are embracing changes and possibilities in their own journeys, CGU is doing the same.

As many of you know—and as some of our newest students may be learning for the first time—CGU has been in partnership discussions with Pomona College since early this year. Separately, we are undertaking an important academic redesign to ensure that CGU continues to meet the evolving needs of our students and prepare them for the challenges they will face as engaged members of society.

I encourage you to visit our FAQ page, which addresses the most important issues and opportunities concerning the potential partnership and academic redesign.

At its core, this remains an academic year in which our students will explore the world and their place in it, our faculty will serve as their mentors and as experts in their disciplines, and our staff will continue to provide the critical support that makes things run smoothly.

I am starting this year with a firm commitment from our leadership team to the entire CGU community:

To our students, your academic and personal growth will be at the center of our decisions. As we navigate partnerships and an academic redesign, we will make sure that you receive important information about your programs, that your voices are heard, and that you receive the support you need to help ensure your success.

To our faculty, we will work closely with you on the academic transformation that is taking place. We recognize the value of your insights as we build CGU’s future.

And to our staff, we commit to acknowledging your vital role in our daily operations and to CGU’s long-term flourishing. We will use your feedback to inform the new operational structure for the university, and we will provide the clarity and resources to help you make informed decisions about your future.

We deeply appreciate everyone’s adaptability during this period of transition. It is our firm commitment to work alongside all of you this year. Thank you for your shared belief in CGU.

Sincerely,

Michelle Bligh
Interim President
