The mission of the IDEA Labs (Innovations Design Empowerment Applications) at Claremont Graduate University is to design, research and develop IT artifacts that can help solve human and social problems in domains like chronic disease management, social media, and health care. The director is CISAT Professor Samir Chatterjee.

IDEA Labs faculty and students follow a simple paradigm called “Design Science,” for which the lab is well known in the CGU community. IDEA Labs has many projects underway in such areas and domains as sensor networks, chronic disease management systems, social media, health care, and energy informatics. The lab is also a leader in persuasive technology—hardware, software, and devices that can alter human behavior and attitude without deception or coercion.

Current Projects in the lab include:

1. Understanding Cancer Caregiving and Predicting Burden: An Analytics and Machine Learning Approach
2. From Empowerment to Sustained Health Behaviors using Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Artifacts
3. Building Smart Applications for Promoting Energy Conservation Behavior using a Persuasive Technology Approach
4. Using Mobile Applications to Improve Patient-Physician Communication on Complementary and Alternative Medicine
5. My Heart: An mHealth Management System for low-income/high-risk Heart Failure Patients Using Expert-System and Persuasive Technology
6. Tapping into the Health Wisdom of Crowd- Trends in Healthcare Social Networks
7. Testing Persuasive Power of Interfaces using Neuroscience Measurement Tools
8. Tapping into the Health Wisdom of Crowd- Trends in Healthcare Social Networks
9. Persuasive Sensing Networks: A New Frontier to Changing Human Behavior
10. OH-Buddy: A Novel Text/Voice-based Mobile Persuasive Technology Intervention to Enhance Caregiver Support of Underserved Older Patients with Diabetes
11. DIL – A Conversational Agent for Congestive Heart Failure Patients
